Between ourselves, there is no such thing, abstractly, as a 'good' book. A book is 'good' only when it meets some human hunger or refutes some human error.

About This Quote

It is easy to speak about the importance of books and their relevance in our lives, but it is much harder to really grasp its meaning and importance. We all know that a book without an audience would be like a person without a shadow, but we seldom think of the fact that a book may have been read by many but not been understood at all. In fact, it doesn't matter if a book has been read by only one other person. That other reader will always think of himself as the first reader - he will be the one who understood the book best. And, even though one book may have been praised by many, it won't mean anything if it has no purpose to fulfill.
